| Proudly Coloring Outside the Lines Opening Reception: Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 7:00PM – 8:00PM Student Involvement Suite of the Stamp Open to the Public. Free Admission. To exhibit various works from artists of the LGBTQQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Ally) community in order to promote respect, tolerance, and promotion of artists in our community. All artwork has been submitted by members of the University, College Park, DC, and surrounding communities. All artwork has been created by each individual artist in reference to the general theme of LGBT-related topics. Artists have been given the freedom to express different viewpoints of LGBTQQIA individuals. Artists’ names will be listed upon final confirmation in late March. E. Patrick Johnson will lecture about his latest book, Sweet Tea: An Oral History of Black Gay Men of the South, forthcoming from the University of North Carolina Press. Johnson is chair, director of graduate studies, professor of Performance Studies and of African American Studies at Northwestern University. He is the author of Appropriating Blackness: Performance and the Politics of Authenticity (Duke University Press, 2003). He is co-editor, with Mae G. Henderson, of Black Queer Studies: A Critical Anthology (Duke University Press).

Trick (1999): Gabriel, an aspiring writer of Broadway musicals, meets Mark, a muscled stripper, who picks him up on the subway. They spend the night trying to find somewhere to be alone... forced to contend with Gabriel's selfish roommate, his irritating best friend, and a vicious, jealous drag queen in a gay dance club. The sun rises on a promising new relationship.
Paris Is Burning (1990): Documents the lives of several Black and Latino drag queens, transwomen, and men who "vogue" (a form of competitive dance) in the
early '90s New York City drag ball scene. The audience will get an inside look at the aspirations, hopes, and troubles of those interviewed, which may not be so different from their own after all.

Given the contentious social and political events surrounding the LGBT community, building skill for communicating across intense disagreements is increasingly imperative. This workshop is designed to help participants build skill for maintaining composure and opening lines of communication during difficult disagreements. This workshop will focus on LGBT issues, but the skills are applicable across many contexts. All are welcome.

Before Night Falls (2000): The film version of Cuban poet and novelist Reinaldo Arenas' autobiography (Antes que anochezca) recounts the events of his life during the Cuban Revolution and later, his exile, and struggle with AIDS. In Spanish with subtitles, this film shows one example of gay life both outside the US and before Stonewall. Starring Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) and others, with Johnny Depp making an appearance in two different roles.
